The City of Muskogee definitely has it roots in the Tribal Nations of the United States. There were several Indian Tribes that got together and formed the 5 civilized Tribes. The 5 civilized tribes museum was put together to honor those tribes that were not considered to be wild or savage by the standards of the day. In fact Multi-Clean commercial cleaning service works with several of these tribes as well as some other tribes that did not make this list.

The term “civilized” was used by Caucasian settlers to refer to these tribes. During the 18th and 19th century the Anglo-American practices and cultures were incorporated into the 5 civilized tribes. However, they had the freedom and opportunity to continue their culture and language throughout their tribe. Saving their history is a very important part of the culture of the tribes. Even today the languages of the tribes continue to be spoken and taught in schools.

It was Muskogee where all of the 5 civilized tribes gathered in the early 1900’s to write a constitution for the official State of Sequoyah. Unfortunately, this “Indian State” was denied and did not become a part of the Union. The State of Oklahoma officially became a state in 1907. The name Oklahoma means “home of the Red Man”, of home of the Indians or Indian Nation.  It was at this point that Oklahoma pride began, also called Okie Pride.
